I started attending AGDQ in 2015 as a fun way to connect with other speedrunners. I always appreciated that it was a charity event, but back then I didn't think about the work we were doing as much as the fun we were having.
In 2019 I lost my dad to lung cancer. It was *during* AGDQ 2019 and I was still in the event hotel when I got the news. That year, the work we were doing became extremely personal. And I was so grateful to have a place to be where I felt like speedrunners like me made a positive difference in peoples lives. I had thought that that was the end of my personal story about cancer. It wasn't. Three months ago I got my own diagnosis. One surgery later they say I'm cancer free again, and here we are. Happy AGDQ 2022. The work we do for charity every year has never meant more to me. And when we can finally do AGDQ again in person, I'm still going to be here... hopefully even with a run or two.
