Very rarely does a hashtag and campaign fill me with as much emotion as LegalizeMother3. I’ve loved the fun and excitement it’s brought on. Then it became an Entry in SAGDQ and suddenly things have gotten real for me.
I love AGDQ and Doctor’s without borders for a very personal reason. I have epilepsy. Growing up with it I heard all sorts of myths and misinformation about both epilepsy and seizures. It was scary, I cannot even fathom how much scarier it would have been if I had been left untreated. Seizures can do a number on adults, much less children. I’ve almost died from one when they weren’t properly controlled with medication. Doctors without borders can help epileptics like me who probably would have died without diagnosis and help. When I was diagnosed with epilepsy as a kid, it’s like the life I knew and loved was over, like I fell off a cliff, like I became some weird person chimera instead of myself. My family changed, medication messed with my head, and everything was just profoundly different. Even now the memories are hard to recall. I identified strongly with the masked man in Mother 3. I felt robotic and empty. I didn’t want to identify with him though. I wanted to be Lucas and when the final confrontation happened I realized I could be. That part of me was always still there and the game gave me hope that the dark dragon that is epilepsy didn’t have to destroy my world. Instead maybe I could use it to help make a better one. As part of the epileptic community, the “legalize” hashtag means a great deal and seeing it applied to a game I love this way resonates with me. Legality and epilepsy are tied together. Driving, disability, and epileptic treatments all are woven into a tapestry of law. There are illegal things in today’s society that might help epileptic kids more and maybe even keep them from feeling like a masked man. Using this hashtag invokes that and it sends a clear message that we want a game we love to be translated and legal to play for more people. |
