Little long and rambley donation: In 1996, dad got us into the Tomb Raider games, over the years dad, my brother, and myself would pass the controller back and forth while playing. In 2000, dad found a game making program for Windows ME, I remember us spending two weeks making a little boulder run level. In 2003, I saved in the middle of a death fall in Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness and say I’ll get us back to where we were thinking that it wasn’t that far in the game. Queue two weeks of playing after school and realizing just how much dad had played while we were at school or sleeping. In 2014, dad loses his fourth battle with thyroid cancer, never getting to meet his granddaughter. Last night, I realized how much he would have loved speed running games. Every day I miss my dad, I think of all the things I wish he could have been there for… To those who have recently lost or fear they may lose someone to cancer I want to tell you something I wish someone had told me; those feelings are normal, you aren’t alone, and most importantly the memories will stop bringing so much ache with them. Cancer is a sour note in a song, but it doesn’t have to be the last note and it doesn’t change the notes that came before it. |
