Last year, my father was diagnosed with lung cancer. Usually lung cancer is only diagnosed once it's too late to be operable. Thankfully, due to a CAT scan for an unrelated injury, my father was diagnosed very early and to was able to have the entire tumor removed. He has since recovered and is expected to be cured thanks to the early detection. However, as the vast majority of lung cancer cases are linked with smoking, and my father has never been a smoker, I realized that he should probably get the house tested for radon. Sure enough, the radon levels were higher than the healthy limit, and we were able to take mitigations to lower the levels below the safe threshold. This may sound like a trite PSA from 30 years ago, but it is actually important to test for radon to prevent the risk of getting cancer in the first place.
